Beginning to Respond

Choose a short passage from your novel that made an impact on you as you read it, that made you stop and think maybe even say "Oh wow" to yourself.  It may have made you stop and think because you made a personal connection. It may have made you wonder and ask a question. It may have made you react in some emotional way to the words on the paper.  In your response, quote the passage and list the page number that it can be found on.  Explain, in detail, why you chose this passage, what reason did you have that made you stop and think or had you reacting in some way. Include your feelings and emotions as well as state any connections you made (text to self, text to text, text to world). An example  from another novel of how to start is this:

"Big signs were posted at the pool saying"No Jews or Dogs Allowed". pg 14
As I read this passage I couldn't believe that this could happen. How could the Jewish even be compared to dogs?"

I chose this passage because I think this was the first time that she realized that there was more boys like her.

    1. I like the passage that you have chosen, if I has Parvana, I would feel a lot more comfortable knowing that there are more people that are disguising themselves to go to school. I still don't understand why there was a ban on girls going to school. They have more value then being your slaves. Even being a slave to a man is silly and unneeded. Why cant you go and pick up the bread? Are you being held at gun point and the person doing it is telling you that your wife must do your slave labour by picking up groceries and cleaning? Gosh some people are lazy!

  2. "One of the soldiers grabbed the photo of Parvana's father and tore it to pieces. Another began hitting her mother with a stick" After reading this passage on pg42, I am quite disgusted at what the human race has become. I mean look at what we have done, built monuments of great size, invented gadgets and gizmos that advance our lives, and even left our own atmosphere into the stars. But on the other hand, we have terrible wars, racism of both skin colours, women descriminaton and much more. Why did the prison officers break down the door and steal Parvana's father, why couldn't Parvana and her mother see her dad? And why did they begin hitting her with a stick?

    1. I believe a lot of the horrible things that have happened in our world are caused by power. Most wars if not all wars started with a person or a group of people who wanted power and control over something. Racism and women discrimination are also about having power and control over a gender or a race. Yes, mankind has made many wonderful things that have made this world better, but then there are also the wars, racism, and the other things you have listed. I believe the Taliban broke down Parvana's door because they suspected her father did something illegal and wrong. I'm not sure why they wouldn't let Parvana and her mother see her father, and why the Taliban started beating them with sticks.

    2. Because of the Taliban being there old arrogant selves, they won't 2 innocent women see their father/husband. Their minds have been corrupted by greed and power which gave them an idea that women were weak and should only be used for slave labour, while men should sit on mountains of gold and power. How very pathetic, can anyone name a redeeming quality about them, I sure can't

  3. I agree. We do have terrible wars happening in different countries and there is racism happening this day. Yeah like why can't they just see their father and see how he is and see where he is. Why did they start hitting her with a stick she's just a innocent girl doing nothing wrong, just wondering where her father is.

    1. Her father was put into the jail that Parvana and her mother go to to see him and ask why he was put in jail. And because the Tabien had a policy of women being outside they were hitting her. I still wonder if the note that Nooria wrote in her fathers name didn't mean anything to the soldiers.

  4. Pg 59, Are you waiting for it to rain inside so your bucket will fill itself? I chose this passage because this is when things actually got done around the apartment and this is when Mrs. Weera came to the apartment to help the family and what's been happening with the mother. Why did the mother just stop caring for her family when the father got taken away, she just sat in a corner with blankets over her so know one can see her and she wouldn't speak to anyone also. I was reliefed when some finaaly took charge of the family.

    1. First off I found a few grammar mistakes in your piece, I believe that I can answer your question about the mom with something that I can relate to. In The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask, in the area, The Great Bay, you can find a Zora( an antphramorphic fish) who is quite sad, conversing with other characters will allow you to learn that her eggs were stolen by pirates and instead of dealing with it and getting them herself, she silently stares out into the ocean, much like how the mother deals with herself after her husband was taken away by the Taiben.

    2. I believe that the reason Parvana's mother ignored her children and stayed on the toshak for so long was because she was depressed. Her husband had been taken away from their family and dragged from their home. If you were Parvana's mother, how would you react? You also have to take into consideration what the family has been through. They have had their houses bombed, possessions lost and destroyed, and nearly killed. Now to top that, her husband has been put into prison for doing absolutely nothing. If anything, I would say that the way her mother reacted is quite appropriate for the situation.

    3. @Abigail N

I agree that Parvana's mother was depressed. Even her kids thought it too. After what she had been through it would be really scary. She lost her husband to the Taliban for no reason and she got beaten up for trying to get him out of prison. When Mrs. Weera came to their house she helped their mother be happy.

Why do you think that Parvana's mother ignored her kids but was fine with Mrs. Weera?

    4. I really liked when Mrs. Weera came to the house. She did get a lot done!

@Troy MacIsaac I think Parvana's mother ignored her kids because she was going through a hard time at home, losing her husband to the Taliban, and not being able to go outside and get all the things she needs. Of course I felt bad for the kids because Ali is only 2 and he needs his mother!

    5. @French Fry

Even before Parvana lost her father they couldn't go outside without going with a boy and Parvana's father hurt his leg so he couldn't walk so well. It was hard for them. I think the reason that she was depressed because she missed her husband so much and she couldn't get him out of jail.

  5. Pg. 121 "All of a sudden one of the soldiers took out a sword, raised it above his head and brought it down on the man's arm. Blood flew in every direction. The man cried out in pain." I chose this passage because this is one of the examples of persecution in the 'Breadwinner'. I am just so disgusted by the Taliban in this book especially in this scene. I mean, they cut prisoners' hands off as a punishment! I get they are trying to show power and dominance, but do they really have to show it by chopping innocent peoples' hands off? Is that actually necessary? Also, why were there so many people in the stadium? Did the Taliban force the people in there? Or did the people choose to go and watch that horrific tragedy? Either way, it is still unacceptable.

    1. I also am discussed of the taliban in this book. Like doing really horrible a terrifying things to the innocent people. Why would you do this to these people because some have be going threw some hard times like peoples how being bombed and people loosing family members of the taliban capturing them and throwing them into jail.

    2. They will be punished for their crimes against women, not at first, but in the long run, or karma will get them and deserve to bleed and suffer the way they treated women.

    3. I agree they should be punished because women have as much rights as men and they don't deserve to be treated this way.
I made a connection to the book I was resently reading it is called behind the bedroom wall
.and the Jews had to hide out like the women had to hide from the Taliban.

    4. I think that the Taliban made a bunch of people watch because from what I read they are not good people. I am only on Chapter 2 so I don't have much to say.

  6. One afternoon, she heard an angry man screaming above her in the Window Woman's house. She could hear a woman crying and thudding, pg 133.

I wonder what could be going on in the Window Woman's house, is the angry man her husband who discovered her dropping the little gifts to Parvana, or was it for another reason? Or is the man a Taliban soldier who broke into her home and is destroying everything and taking any other loved ones much like what happened to Parvana's family? If so, for what reason? If it is for dropping the little gifts, what is wrong with that? She was only bringing joy to a young boy, is it that worth it to lose it and start throwing everything around and possibly hurt the woman and anyone else inside.

    1. I think that maybe the man was beating his wife because he agreed with the Taliban. How do you beat your own wife? I am angry at how he is acting, women deserve as much rights as the men.

  7. Passage:

    Page #63

They were going to turn her into a boy. "As a boy, you'll be able to move in and out of the market, buy what we need, and no one will stop you."

I chose this passage because this is a pretty big part of the book. If Parvana wanted to go to the market to get food she would have to be with a boy. But then they thought of turning her into a boy. It would be really scary because being outside with a lot of the Taliban they could notice she is a girl and she could get beaten up and seriously injured or killed. I don't understand why girls were not allowed outside. They are humans they should have the right to get fresh air by themselves and go to school for education but no they had to stay inside. There was another part where it said that if girls get caught the Taliban would beat them and whip them. I don't understand how they could do this to innocent people. It is pretty scary that this happens and girls can't do really anything but stay inside of their homes.

  8. It is really wrong that she has to become a boy girls should be proud of who they are. I wonder why the Taliban hated women so much.

I think that Parvana decided to be a boy because she wanted to help her family. Being a boy she could get food from the market for her family, make money for food, meet new friends, get cleaned, e.t.c.
I really enjoyed reading this book because I got way more knowledge on what happened in Afghanistan.

I think it's the same reason that Hitler hated the Jews. For no reason. It doesn't make sense on why would they do such hateful things.

  9. The passage I choose from the book was Chapter 6 page 63 and it read They were going to turn her into a boy. "As a boy, you'll be able to move in and out if the market, buy what we need, and no one will stop you," Mother said. I choose this passage because this is when Parvana is told that she will have to be a boy in order to save her family from going broke. I felt a lot of emotion as I read this part of the book, like sad, hopeful and weary. I really wanted her transformation to work and I was hopeful that she would be able to roam the streets without blowing her cover. If i was living during this time if would be a hard choice for me to make, but I would most likely do it. I really enjoyed this book and I was very happy to see that @Emma Roberts found a second book!

  10. I wonder why the solder that was crying because his wife got shot didn't realize that the same thing that happened to him happened to the other family and that people are feeling the same way as him. I wonder if Parvana's Mom and sister survived along with her sister's husband. A Passage I wanted to talk about is when her mom said " As a boy you will be able to buy what you need and no one will stop you ". I choose i because it's just really sad thinking about someone having to be a boy just to be able to go out side and do what ever it is. If you are a girl you should be able to go out side, what on earth makes you any less that anyone " Nothing" nothing at all. So people should be able to have that freedom because I bet the guys that made the rule will feel horrible if the were locked inside a building doing nothing. So anyone please just give me your'e thought and ideas.
